Not long ago, I was told a story abut the funny things that happen on social media. The story was very disturbing and it made me sick to my stomach. Very sick that I actually had to use the ladies room to up shuck my lunch. The story was about a young woman who lived an interesting life online and one day she decided to died. Basically she faked her own online death. Rather than anyone letting the young woman return to her real life offline she was hounded by a group of savages. She was put on many blogs and different revenge websites. The thing I don’t understand was…why?
I asked a few questions to my friend about the story. From my understanding she had fake an illness online but never asked for any monetary donation. She never asked for a dime. As the story went it turn out she hung out with the wrong crowd online and they turned against her.
My questions that I do have are the following:
1. Did she threaten anyone with harm?
2. Did she cheat on a love one?
3. Did she commit some type of monetary fraud such as donations?
4. Did she commit a crime?
5. Was she wanted by authorities?
The answer to the questions were…no! Maybe she was having a break down from being on the web or she was tired of living a false life online. Or she has some type of mental illness. She was bullied online and offline. I asked my friend is she still alive and she said she didn’t know. She said rumors has it that she went into a mental ward. I wondered if the young woman had multi-personalities. I have a family member with dissociative identity disorder. It’s DID for short or as some know it as multi-personalities. I have only met four of her other sides. I say sides as it seems each one has some type of mood swing. One is nice and the others are just mean. My aunt said I haven’t met the “others” as she calls them.
DID is a mental disorder and it can cause chaos in one’s life and others. I’m not for sure if I can say it’s a mental disorder or a psychological disorder. A friend and I have been arguing over that. Back to the young lady’s false online life story. She could have some type of mental disorder or maybe she had a moral issue. Whatever the case that it was she shouldn’t have been put through a witch trial. No one deserves that. Everyone is raising issues about bullying. Have you ever notice the anti-bully people bullying the bullier? Not sure if bullier is a word but I’m using it. Sorry a wrong doesn’t make it a right.
Sometimes people create a false life online due to the issues that is going on their life. They need an escape from what is going on their reality of life. This is what I have gathered after watching MTV’s Catfish show. Some of the episodes are just weird. Some are very confusing. One was about a girl who was bullied by others and created a male persona. With the persona she created she had an online relationship with a girl. When she was confronted by MTV’s Catfish crew she said it was because she was bullied. This is where stress of life can cause some type of mental confusion. Later through the season the girl came out as a lesbian. Like I said Catfish episodes can be weird and confusing.
I guess the moral of this post is don’t hang around bad apples. If you are going to create a false online persona make sure you let others know you are doing is creative writing. My friend, Mya, said she has seen authors created the characters for their upcoming novels from interacting with others on social media. Some characters are created based off the friendship they bonded with others. I can say it’s a sad world when others feel they need to be judge and the jury when it comes to witch hunting. Another reason on why I don’t have social media accounts like Twitter or MySpace. Is MySpace still in business?
If the young woman had a mental disorder I would say what happen to her was a hate crime. She was hated and bullied by others in the witch hunt. She can sue her tormentors for pain and defamation. I see the word defamation used alot when celebrities talk about when they are being slander by others. I guess it’s pain and suffering. The lesson learned is to be careful of what you do or say online as witch hunters can come after you. If you have to go after others in a vicious way I see that as bullying. My opinion did cause an argument between me and my friend, who told me the story about the young woman. Everyone has an opinion but why should it cause issues in one’s life? So many questions and not enough answers.
I did write a post about the MTV show, Catfish. Link is provided below.
